Hamlin, Waters Honored
Two outstanding educators.
Dr. C. H. Hamlin and the late Dr.
John M. Waters, were
recognized during a special
Honors Convocation held on the
Atlantic Christian Collge
campus. Both men have devoted
the major portion of their lives to
service to the college.
Two new major campus
facilities have been named in
their honor. The college's
student center has been named
“Hamlin Student Center," while
the college's largest men's
residence hall has been named
“Water's Hall.”
President Arthur D. Wenger,
who presided over the
recognition ceremonies, said of
Dr. Hamlin:
“Society has an incurable
fascination for those whose lives
have exerted a significant in
fluence upon it. Though much of
this process reaches its most
perceptive insight when life is
seen in the long perspective of
history, we can be gratefuly that
such appraisals need not be
postponed until after death.
“Dr. Charles H. Hamlin began
his teaching career at Atlantic
Christian College in 1925. While
history will yield a more perfect
measure of his life and its effect
upon generations of students
who have known him and loved
him, we honor him today
Ix'cause our gratitude for his life
calls out for expression now.
“A measure of his usefull life
has been his courageous
espousal of cause which exalt
justice and human dignity. His
support of such causes has been
with utter disregard for politcal
expediency. He has gone
through life brandishing an axe
wherever he felt chopping
needed to be done with blissful
disregard as to where the chips
might fall.
“Most of all, we gratefully
recognize him for his deep
humanitarian concern for people
— all people; for his com
mitment to the idea that the
education of the human mind
requires digging far beneath the
surface of accumulated facts,
dates and battles. We honor him
for championing those principles
which, if they were generally
implemented in our society.

would enrich the world in the
way his life has enrichwi ours.
“In recognition of his service
to mankind through his
association with Atlantic
Christian College, the Board of
Trustees, concurring with an
enthusiastic student tx)dy and
faculty, has directed that the
Student Center al Atlantic
Christian College be nanu*d the
Hamlin Student Center.
Dr. Wenger, recognizing the
family of Dr. .lohn M Waters,
said;
“Dr John Mayo Waters' death
on Feb. 5, 1969 brought to a close
an association with Atlantic
Christian College which, with
several temporary in
terruptions, covered a period of
.57 years. This association Ix'gan
in 1911 when he enrolled as a
student and continued through
his service as professor of
religion, secretary of the En
dowment Fund, business
manager and special assistant to
the president. This reprt>sents a
record of service and devotion
unequaled here at our college
and seldom attained in higher
c>ducation generally.
“Few members of our current
student body knew him but all
liave sliared in the rich legacy of
devoticm and service which he
left to his alma mater, for he was
a major architect of those
foundatioas which have given
strength and durability to the
present and future development
of the college. What Atlantic
Christian College has Ix'come
and whatever it may l)ecome in
the future will always bear the
indelible imprint of this life.
■'Following his death, the
board of trustees, seeking to
perpetuate his memory in a
tangible manner, directed that
the most recently constructc*d
residence hall for men be named
Waters Hall.
“It is appropriate, therefore,
that on the occasion of this
Honors Convocation we
gratefully call to mind Dr.
Waters' lifetime of service to
Atlantic Christian College and
accord this special recognition
to members of his family."
